Colorful Mountains and pre-Colombian cultures

This region covers three provinces: Salta, Jujuy and Tucumán. In Salta, its capital city, which was named after the province, also known as “la Linda” (the pretty one) is located inside the Valley of Lerma. It was founded on April 16th 1582 by Mr. Hernando de Lerma. The city is at 1.200 mts. above the sea level. From Salta most of the excursions to all the attraction start. The "Train to the Clouds" departs towards San Antonio de los Cobres, through marvellous sceneries until 3.800 mts. ; and trips to Atacama Desert (Chile).

In Jujuy, we find “La Quebrada de Humahuaca”, which is a great canyon, like a deep cut in the mountain along hundreds of Kms. Vividly colored landscapes frame groups of villages with adobe houses. Towns that can be visited along the road, Purmamarca, an indigenous place lying against the “Cerro de los 7 Colores” (Seven color Mount); Tilcara, last place occupied by the Incas, next to which there is a “Pucará” or fortified town built by the Omaguaca natives in pre-Columbian times. Today this town is chosen by local contemporaneous artists to live and show their art. It is recommended to stay one or more night in Purmamarca or Tilcara, in their hotels “de charme”.

Tucumán is the smallest Argentine province, and known as “the Garden of the Republic” because of the richness of its flora. San Miguel de Tucumán presents intact traces of colonial history. After crossing green sugar cane fields, the road leads to the Quebrada de los Sosas reaches Tafí del Valle at the feet of the impressive Sierra del Aconquija.
